Corrosion

Corrosion is a natural chemical process in which metals and other materials deteriorate due to reactions with environmental elements—especially oxygen, moisture, acids, or chemicals. The most common form is the rusting of iron, but corrosion affects many metals like aluminum, copper, and steel. Over time, corrosion weakens structures, equipment, and components, leading to safety risks, increased maintenance costs, and material failures.

🔩 How Corrosion Occurs:

Corrosion typically involves:

  • Oxidation reactions, where metal atoms lose electrons

  • Exposure to air, water, or chemicals

  • Formation of unwanted corrosion products like rust or scale

Example:
Iron + Water + Oxygen → Rust (Iron Oxide)

🛠️ Common Types of Corrosion:

  1. Uniform Corrosion – Evenly affects the entire surface

  2. Galvanic Corrosion – Occurs between two dissimilar metals in contact

  3. Pitting Corrosion – Localized holes or pits in the metal

  4. Crevice Corrosion – Happens in gaps or joints where moisture accumulates

  5. Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) – Cracks under combined stress and corrosive environment

🧰 Corrosion Prevention Methods:

  • Protective Coatings (e.g., paint, galvanizing)

  • Cathodic Protection

  • Corrosion Inhibitors

  • Material Selection (using corrosion-resistant alloys)

  • Environmental Control (reducing humidity or chemical exposure)
